Dabur Sanitize : Complete Family Protection

It was a launch that had to happen one day. The Covid pandemic accelerated the product entry into the new hot category- sanitizer. Dabur which is one the respected FMCG and health major in the country did not let the opportunity wasted. In March 2020, the company accelerated the product launch of its range of sanitizers and antiseptic liquid product range into the Indian market.

The corporate brand Dabur is associated with herbal/ayurvedic products and true to its heritage, the new product launch also has herbal ingredients like Turmeric and Aloe vera inside. What is interesting about the new product launch is the brand name. Dabur has decided to use the generic name Sanitize for the product range endorsed by Dabur brand. Under the brand name Dabur Sanitize, the company has launched a range of products like hand sanitizers, antiseptic liquid and soap. Another interesting thing is that it has another variant Dabur Sanitizer Plus which is an antiseptic liquid promoted in South India using the actress Simran. 

Dabur Santize antiseptic liquid is challenging the market leader Dettol. The USP of Dabur Santize is the properties such as antibacterial, antiseptic and no-burning (which takes on the Dettol ) along with natural ingredients like turmeric and Aloe vera. 

The market is currently flooded with products such as santizers, antiseptic liquids, creams, sprays and what not. The market now has the demand owing to the relentless spread of pandemic and fear. So the market is able to contain the supply of these products to a large extent. In that way, Dabur also will ride the wave of this category growth. The buzzword at this point in time is the ability of these products to reach the point of purchase. According to the news reports, Dabur Santize is available initially in online platforms. The brand will benefit from trend once it is available offline at a large scale. 

In a branding perspective, Dabur had chosen not to launch these products under a new brand or even a sub-brand. Rather it has used the generic product descriptor route for the new products. In one way the company has missed the opportunity for a new brand which could've offered more individuality and flexibility in terms of positioning and promotion.

Brand Update : Odomos' experiment with product forms

In classic marketing textbooks, one of the strategies in managing the maturity stage of the product lifecycle is product modification. Theory suggests that there are two types of modifications - retention modification and conquesting modifications. Retention modifications are those which aims at satiating existing customers while the conquesting modification is aimed at getting new customers. 

Odomos has been in the market for decades and the challenge it faces is that stagnation in the market in terms of product penetration. Although mosquitoes are ubiquitous, Odomos is still a small brand in terms of size. This is probably because of lack of awareness and doubts about the safety of applying the cream directly into the skin. 
Odomos in recent years has addressed this problem head-on by launching a series of different product forms. Now the brand is available in the original cream form, liquid, gel, patch and now wearables and spray form. This strong marketing thought behind the brand should be appreciated. 
In the promotion front, the company has been very active. The target segment in most of the campaign is the children. I wonder why the company is restricting its target ( at least in the ads) to children. It is true that children are active outside the house and risk of them getting diseases is high, but the brand should have focused more on functional/benefit positioning targeting away from the age variable. 
The current campaign of Odomos is also well made which is themed in a rap setting but again focusing on children. 


The competitor Good Knight is also very active and since the product form differentiation is not insulated from emulation, other brands are also quick to come with their own versions. 
My personal take is that Odomos should think of a change in the segmentation strategy focusing on the proposition of a facilitator to active life since mosquitos are a nuisance to an active outdoor life.

Odomos : Play it Safe

Odomos is a 40 year old brand which has a generic status in the mosquito repellent cream market in India. The brand which was originally from Balsara came into Dabur's fold after the acquisition  of Balsara Hygiene Products  in 2005. 
The household insecticide market in India is worth around Rs 1600 crore. The smallest of the segment in this market is the mosquito repellent cream segment which is of size Rs 50 crore. The largest segment of the insecticide market is that of mosquito coil which is worth Rs 900 crore. Odomos has a virtual monopoly in the cream market.

The small size of the mosquito repellent cream market is the problem that the brand faces. The major challenge is to make the segment grow. Having said that, creams have found lukewarm response from the consumer. The major reason being the questions regarding the efficacy and safety of the product which needs to be directly applied to the skin. 

As a consumer , I too had these questions regarding Odomos. But should say from my experience that Odomos is very effective. But mosquitoes are smarter lot and they know to search and bite on places where Odomos cream is not applied. 
Odomos as a brand has  tried to address this safety issue by getting endorsement from medical associations. The brand prominently displays the message of  being "Skin Friendly " in their packs. Another bold step that the brand took was to target kids. The move is risky because parents would think twice before using Odomos regularly on kids because the perceived risk is too high.

Odoms now has product forms of Cream, Lotin and Oil. Odomos mosquito repellent oil was created to target rural market because oil product form has more acceptance in that market. More over oil applies better on the skin and is more effective in the job.

The brand owners have invested consistently on the brand. The distribution reach is very good for this product. Earlier, one inhibiting factor was the price which has now being resolved. Odomos have come out with smaller packs of Rs 5 and Rs 10 which I would say will encourage more buys.
The challenge for the brand is to make consumer consider Odomos as the primary defense option against mosquitoes. The product  is has maximum utility outside the house and that is why the brand is promoting it for kids who wants to play outside. The brand is also trying to promote its safety aspect through a variant Odomos Naturals which contains Aloe Vera. 
As a user of this brand, these questions are still  there regarding safety. Odomos despite running so many campaigns so far has still not convinced me that it is safe for regular use. The dilemma for the brand is that it cannot harp too much that it is safe because consumers then will think that it is mild and hence may not be effective .
In times where mosquitoes are now immune to coils and vaporizers , Odomos has proven to be a best bet for a good night sleep.

Brand Update : Hajmola Repositions as Audio Candy

It has been a while since I updated about Hajmola Digestives. The most significant development happened last year ( 2009) when the brand undertook a major repositioning exercise . The brand started calling itself an Audio Candy.

Hajmola which is a unique digestive tablet is a very powerful brand. This Rs 1 billion brand has been able to stay relevant in the consumer's mind through consistent campaigns and some smart distribution strategies. Hajmola digestive tablet is now selling approximately 2.5 crore tablets daily.
Hajmola is known for its unique taste ( Khatta Meetha taste ) and the taste has been its USP ever since its launch. The unique taste with its digestive properties made it a post-meal habit of many Indian consumers.

While Hajmola tablets are consumed for its utility, candies are a different ball game altogether. Candies are consumed for fun rather than utility. Hence Hajmola candy should be positioned more on the fun side rather than the utility . Hajmola has already established itself on the utility ( digestive ) platform , the challenge was to put fun aspect to it.

Dabur then found a very smart way of putting fun into this digestive. The brand named itself an Audio Candy. The name is derived from the insight that the Zingy Tangy taste of Hajmola in your mouth will be accompanied by a lip-smacking sound. The idea of Audio Candy was born.

The idea of Audio Candy is a very smart idea which communicates the positioning of unique taste in a very fun filled manner. The TG - mainly kids will like the concept of the audio candy. And the concept makes the USP of Hajmola difficult to copy. Along with the repositioning , Hajmola also launched a couple of variants like Imli and Kachcha mango which gave more reasons to buy this product.

It is interesting to see the evolution of Hajmola from a functional tablet to a fun filled candy. The brand has successfully extended itself to a larger market but retaining its core strength and not diluting the utility for which it is loved for.

Dabur Dashmularista : With You for Life

Dashmularista is a traditional ayurvedic medicine which is very popular in India as a restorative tonic. Although this is a medicine, Indian consumers usually buy and use this tonic over the counter because of the knowledge passed on from elders. And since this is an ayurvedic medicine, consumers are less bothered about the side effects.

Dabur Dashmularista is the first branded ayurvedic ethical asava ( tonic) to be launched in the Indian market as an OTC product. This brand was launched in 2004-2005. Initially Dashmularista was positioned as a restorative tonic for young mothers .

I had earlier written about the poor marketing that has been done with regard to ayurvedic products . There is lot of potential for ayurvedic OTC products in the Indian market. Dabur has to be appreciated for taking an effort in branding such important traditional ayurvedic medicines.

Dabur is also using the bollywood actress Juhi Chawla to promote its ethical branded products. This will further boost the popularity of traditional ayurvedic tonics and prescriptions.

Now Dabur Dashmularista has been positioned as a vital health tonic for ladies. The brand is currently running a TV commercial highlighting the need for such a health tonic for the homemaker. The brand now has the tagline " With You for Life " .

The brand is positioned as a health tonic for every stage of life . The current target market for the brand is the homemakers. I think that over a period of time, Dashmularista will expand its TG to include men and young girls.

The brand is filling an important need in the Indian market. Women often suffer from the fatigue arising out of the stress and strain of homemaking responsibilities. This stress is translated to digestive disorders and physical discomforts like backpain, fatigue,loss of energy etc. And most of the time, ladies resist consulting doctors about their issues at the same time complaining to their husbands about their health issues.
In such a situation , products like Dashmularista has a very important role to play. There will be a better acceptability for such products because of the tradition and perceived " lack of side effects ".

Since its launch in 2004, Dabur Dashmularista is witnessing steady growth. The brand is facing competition from a host of established ayurvedic marketers who sells this product as a ethical medicine. The current campaign will force many such players to take Dashmularista to the OTC market and can expand the market for ayurvedic products.

Brand Update : Dabur Chyawanprash

Dabur Chyawanprash has gone in for a major revamp. The look and feel of the brand has changed and so is the brand ambassador. This November, Dabur has decided to change the look and feel of its leading brand Dabur Chyawanprash.

Dabur hold a commanding 60 % share in the Chyawanprash market. The brand has been using Amitabh Bachchan as its brand ambassador. Infact Big B has been endorsing the brand for more than five years now.


Chyawanprash faces a unique perception issue. The brand is perceived to be a health supplement for elders and kids . The younger generation feels that the brand is not relevant for them. Dabur had earlier addressed this issue in their earlier campaign ' Zaroorat Hai ' using the concept of ' role reversal ' .

Although Big B provided huge equity to the brand, the elderly ambassador further reinforced the perception that the product is for older people.

To break this perception, Dabur has come out with a new campaign featuring the new ambassador MS Dhoni. Dhoni is expected to make the brand attractive to the younger generation. The current success of Dhoni as a cricketer and as a captain gives added advantage to the brand.

Dabur has done more than just a new communication. The brand has also changed the packaging. The new packaging with lot of red color symbolises the activity and alertness. The bottle shape also has been made more modern. Chyawanprash also has a new logo which also reinforce the new targeting.

Dabur also has a new tagline for Chywanprash . The brand has done away with the earlier tagline " Zaroorat Hai ". The new tagline is ' Fit Body , Active Mind '. The brand gives the message that to win in life, one needs to have an active mind and a fit body.

The brand is currently running a new campaign in television featuring Dhoni.

As in the case of any successful celebrity, Dhoni also faces the issue of over exposure . He is now sponsoring many brands from textiles to beverages. In the health drinks category he endorses Boost which is a competitor for Chyawanprash in a broader sense.

When I first saw the commercial, I mistook the ad for Boost. Boost also features Dhoni and Sachin as the brand ambassadors. The settings of both the Boost ad and the Chyawanprash ad are quite similar. Both ads even use the same color red as the main anchor. Only at the end of the ad, I realized that it was for Dabur Chyawanprash.

In message formating , it is better to introduce ( identify) the brand early in the campaign while using celebrities. Because the current trend is that most of the celebrities are over leveraged. Customers will associate the celebrity to some other brand if there is late identification of brand in the advertisments.

Professors Brian Sternthal and Angela Lee in the book " Kellogg on Branding " suggests that late identification strategies are used by brands to create a suspense and hence hold the attention of consumers. However, this is a risky strategy since consumers are free to make their own associations throughout the advertisement duration. Presenting the brand name at the end of the ad may not correct the erroneous association. People do not find it worthwhile to put an effort to correct such an association.

The authors say that late ID is useful for those brands where customers have an unfavorable disposition . Here in this case , there is an unfavorable perception that the brand is for elders and kids . But at the same time , the brand ambassador is endorsing a category competitor. Hence in this case, late identification may have little effect than desired.If Dhoni was not endorsing any other health drinks, this campaign could have produced greater results.


How ever, the brand will gain with the association with Dhoni. According the reports, Dabur also retains Amitabh Bachchan . That makes a formidable combination of endorsers for the brand.

Dabur Chyawanprash : Zaroorat Hai

Dabur Chyawanprash is an interesting brand for anyone who is interested in marketing. Two factors makes it special. First factor is that this is a truly Indian product and a product which is very close to our heritage and mythology. Second factor is the effort of market leader in rejuvenating the category.
Chyawanprash is an ayurvedic health supplement. The name is derived from Hindu Mythology. The story goes like this. Chyawan was the son of Bhingu and Puloma. He was physically weak and later in his life Ashvini Kumars came to his hermitage and offered him a divine medicine " Prash " which made Chyawan young and healthy. The name Chyawanprash came into existence based on this mythology.
Dabur Chyawanprash ( DCP) is a heritage brand which came into existence in the year 1949. The brand is now ruling the market with a marketshare of around 60 - 70 %. The total Chyawanprash market is estimated to be around Rs 300 crore ( AC Neilsen Retail Audit 2006-07 ).
Chyawanprash is popular as a kid's health tonic. Parents used to rely on this product for their kids especially if the kids are between 6-16. Because the tweens are usually hyperactive and less inclined to taking foods. Hence Chyawanprash offered a solution to the worried parents. The ayurvedic tag also alleviated worries of side-effects .

Over a period of time Dabur Chyawanprash began to face tough competition not from other chyawanprash marketers but from health food drinks market . Infact the generic competition was hurting DCP more than the brand competition. The health food drinks like Horlicks, Bournvita, Complan etc appealed more to kids than the Chyawanprash. The modern lifestyle also made this product look dated. There was also a perception among the consumers that Chyawanprash is something that has to be consumed when you are not feeling healthy.

From my own example, I was not considering this product category for my kid. But when my child had a series of cold and fever, I started looking at this product category. Hence this perception was limiting the potential for a brand like DCP. Another perception in the market was regarding the user profile. The category is perceived to be of use to only 'kids and aged' and not for adults. These issues severely restricted the growth of the category.

DCP although was ruling the market faced the issue of stagnation. The stagnation was a result of category stagnation rather than saturation. The only option left for DCP was to rejuvenate the entire product category.
In 2007, Dabur undertook a major repositioning exercise for this Rs 150 cr0re flagship brand. The purpose of repositioning was to :
Stretch the market for Chyawanprash
Make the brand more contemporary
Reinforce new set of attributes.

The brand identified two segments : Adults and Kids as the focal point in the repositioning exercise. A series of TVC and print campaigns were released to target both the segments. The campaigns were aimed at parents. The consumer insight was that people care about their loved ones than oneself ( source : Hindustan Times).

The entire campaign was based on the theme of 'role reversal '. The ads featured the brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan asking the audience to understand the challenges of being a kid, a father and a mother. The campaign involves mother taking the role of a kid, father and son taking the role of a mother and thus understanding the physical and metal exertions involved in each role. The ads end with the Voice-Over ' Dabur Chyawanprash , Zaroorat hai sabko ' ( meaning - DCP : essential for everyone ).

DCP earlier had the slogan - Zaroorat Hai and was positioning itself as a health tonic which is essential for kids. The new tagline broadens the segments by including every member of the family. In the new positioning the brand retains the core brand manthra of ' Natural health tonic' but stretches the segments to include adults.
By positioning it to adults does not mean that the brand has lost its sight on kids. The brand makes itself relevant to kids by a series of campaigns featuring a new brand ambassador Vivek Oberoi.

By positioning itself to new segments, the brand aims to realize its full potential . DCP now stresses on the new set of attributes : health , stress and diabetes. While the standard Chyawanprash takes the health attribute, Dabur launched Chyawanshakthi to take on the stress platform. Chyawansakthi is positioned as a stress reliever and energizer.

DCP also makes the category attractive to diabetic/ diabetic prone consumers by launching Dabur Chyawanprakash. Chyawanprakash is targeting the high density of diabetic patients in our country which makes a highly lucrative market.To take on the competition from the health food drink market, Dabur is planning a foray into the HFD market with a new brand.

News reports suggest that the new gamble has paid off pretty well. What I liked about the repositioning is the execution of the entire idea. Without making much hue and cry, the brand had very subtly made itself relevant to adults.
